A new study authored by The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc. (TPI) for Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) paints the most comprehensive picture to date of the status of institutional philanthropy across the globe.
“The first of its type, this study allows one to understand a country’s philanthropic environment within the larger global context. Policymakers, philanthropists, social change practitioners, and academics will use its comparative data and its in-depth profiles to understand and strengthen the practice of philanthropy,” said Marissa Camacho, Director of WINGS.
Global Institutional Philanthropy: A Preliminary Status Report brings together disperse knowledge and data on institutional philanthropy from countries around the world. Part One examines regional trends, commonalities and diversity across six regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab Region, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America. Part Two profiles institutional giving in 24 countries and the Arab region, providing a wealth of instructive insights, observations, reflections, and quantitative information.
“Philanthropy is an increasingly significant force in addressing human challenges, promoting social change, and advancing equitable economic growth around the world.
While much philanthropy is, and will likely remain, an individual and private act, it appears that institutional philanthropy is taking hold and on the rise in most regions of the world,” said Paula D. Johnson, director of TPI’s Center for Global Philanthropy and author of the study.
The report illuminates how philanthropy is shaped by religious and cultural beliefs and practices, changing political powers, economic courses, patterns of migration and immigration, as well as occasionally strong international influences.
