July 2013 Newsletter: Global data for better philanthropy

Posted By WINGS, Thursday, July 18, 2013

WINGS Dispatch: Global data for better philanthropy | View Newsletter

This edition of WINGS Dispatch is about data. How do we handle the data deluge? We know we can't do it alone—partnerships are essential, now more than ever. Robert Kirkpatrick (UN Global Pulse) says Big Data needs to be treated as a public good, pointing out that data can't be fully exploited without help from the private sector. Jeffrey Falkenstein of the Foundation Center explains how a lack of standards has alienated philanthropy from the Big Data space—standards Patrick Collins of the Hewlett Foundation says "could lower the cost of collaboration by making basic grants data more comparable across foundations." In this issue we ask several new WINGS members how their organisations are using data for social good, and we look at a new set of data-driven human rights grantmaker tools, along with new initiatives, websites and events across the network—and we're taking your ideas for WINGSForum 2014, The Power of Networks.

WINGS Dispatch: Pairing "wicked problems" with partnerships | View Newsletter

Partnerships is the focus of this edition of WINGS Dispatch. At the UN Special Policy Dialogue in April, Sigrid Kaag characterized partnership as "having a shared vision and agreeing on a way forward." We agree. After all, that's what being part of a global network in philanthropy is all about and we're growing. This month we're happy to welcome our newest member, China Foundation Center, and our existing membership is in the midst of an intense and productive Events circuit (see below). In this issue we recap the Community Foundations of Canada Conference and a successful transparency and accountability event with AFE in Colombia, and we take a look at Good, Evil, Wicked, the upcoming book based on the ambitious collaboration led by Gayle Peterson and Hilda Vega of Partners4Change. In just nine months WINGSForum 2014 will bring together a diverse group of partners from around the world, and we are inviting you to share your proposals to make it the best WINGSForum yet. Stay tuned to our website and keep in touch—let's keep our global partnership thriving!

WINGS Dispatch: WINGS at the UN, emerging economies, and the future of data | View Newsletter

This edition of WINGS Dispatch looks at philanthropy in emerging economies around the world. Alliance magazine's latest issue on emerging markets features a number of compelling voices, including our very own Jenny Hodgson (GFCF), Fernando Rossetti (GIFE) and Maria Chertok (CAF Russia). WINGS further explores the issue in a webinar on 28th March. Meanwhile, the International Forum Russia in St. Petersburg is set to host the first award ceremony for the Olga Alexeeva Memorial Prize, rewarding philanthropy development in emerging economies. According to the UNDP's 2013 Human Development Report, rapid economic growth in the Global South will bring several collaboration opportunities. WINGS will engage with the United Nations next month for a special policy dialogue on the role of private philanthropic organisations in international development cooperation. Also in this issue, we recap the successful launch of a new global consultation on philanthropy data held in Rio just weeks ago, and we take a look at the Gates Foundation data interoperability challenge.
