WINGS eLibrary categories

Background

The WINGS network developed a new taxonomy in 2005 to serve the field of grantmaker associations and support organisations, and to reflect their needs. The taxonomy groups items into four top-level groups that reflect broadly the purposes of WINGS network participants:

  • Running an association
  • Supporting grantmakers
  • Promoting philanthropy
  • Engaging the public

We like to think of those groups as a set of concentric circles: first the core business of running and operating an association or support organisation; then supporting grantmakers (their members or clients); then supporting philanthropy as a whole. Finally come the issues above and beyond the philanthropic sector, where the boundaries with the wider field of knowledge may blur.

Every group consists of a limited number of sub-categories. Items in the WINGS eLibrary can be grouped in up to two categories. They can, but do not need to, be in the same group.

No taxonomy is perfect, and there are always gaps or overlaps. For those who are interested in the thinking behind the categories, below we offer some more precise definitions of group and category.
