General

WINGS recognizes the importance of access to knowledge and information for innovation and creation.  With the WINGS eLibrary, WINGS seeks to harness the intellectual power of the field and make it easily accessible to the grantmaker support field. In this spirit, the WINGS eLibrary offers references and provides hyperlinks to publicly available websites and documents that fall within its purview. In offering these hyperlinks, WINGS acts in good faith with the assumption that it provides a service to the user who seeks to harness the wealth of material on the grantmaker support sector, and the authors and publishers who seek to make their information available. WINGS does not gain revenues, and it does not claim credit or ownership.

Respect for intellectual property rights

WINGS respects the intellectual property rights of any author or publisher to their works. It does not seek to present anybody else’s intellectual property as its own. It does not plagiarise. It will always properly attribute and reference the authors and publishers.

Linking to online documents on other servers

The WINGS eLibrary provides hyperlinks to other websites and online documents unless their terms and conditions forbid such links. If resources are free, WINGS will link to these documents. If they are restricted or offered for a charge, WINGS will link to the website where users can access/order the material, such as an online bookshop. WINGS will provide these links as a service to users and organisations alike. Should any organisation ask WINGS to remove hyperlinks and references to any or all of its resources, WINGS will comply.

Hosting of documents on WINGS server

WINGS offers to host documents on its own server if no other hosting is available, provided they fall within the purview of the WINGS eLibrary. In hosting documents WINGS acts effectively as “publisher” of these documents, and will do so only with the author’s/copyright holder’s written agreement and confirmation that the documents’ intellectual property is not disputed.

Saving a document on the WINGS server

WINGS may save documents on its own server for review, indexing and classification purposes only. It will never make this document available to others, unless it is asked to host and distribute the document (see “Hosting of documents on WINGS server”.)

No linking to pirated material

In providing hyperlinks, WINGS devotes great care not to link to material that is plagiarised, pirated, or of unclear origin. Should it come to WINGS’ attention that any WINGS hyperlink links to a document that is pirated or of unclear origin, WINGS will promptly remove this hyperlink.

Editorial discretion

WINGS strives to be comprehensive and neutral, but it retains control of the classification, abstract and other information with which it features and describes any material. WINGS will appreciate any comment and suggestion, and will be grateful when errors or omissions are pointed out; final editorial control, however, is with WINGS.

How to propose new items for the WINGS eLibrary

You know of a great item that you think belongs in the WINGS eLibrary? Please contact website@wingsweb.org and include as much of the following information as you can:

• Author
• Title (if language other than English, please give an English translation)
• Publisher
• Year of publication
• Suggested abstract (in English, 100-150 words)
• Proposed WINGS eLibrary category (click here to review the categories)
• Link to the document or information on how to obtain it

Note that for technical reasons the WINGS eLibrary can only handle characters in the Latin alphabet.

DEFINITIONS

Types

The WINGS eLibrary contains the following types of items:

Document: The most general category - can be texts, manuals, presentations, etc. A document can be in electronic or print format: see various types of formats below.
Article: Items that are published in a magazine, journal or other type of periodical. Like documents, articles can come in different formats (see below) .
Book: Printed items that have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). If they have no ISBN they are classified as documents.
Websites: Top-level domains of organisations that serve as a portal for more information. Sub-pages are classified as html documents.
Multimedia: Items such as media (videos, DVD, CD-ROM, etc.) or executable files.

The WINGS eLibrary does not contain the following types:

• Annual reports
• Periodicals or newsletters, unless they are available online, in which case they may be featured as a website portal. Individual items from periodicals will be featured as articles.

Document and article formats

	A Microsoft Word document. To view a Word document download the free Microsoft Word Viewer on the Microsoft website.
	An item in Portable Document Format (PDF). To view a PDF document download the free Acrobat Reader on the Adobe website.
	A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. To view a PowerPoint document download the free Microsoft Word Viewer on the Microsoft website.
	An html document. If you can view this page, you can view HTML documents.
	A printed item available in the WINGS Library.

In the expanded search you can restrict your search to electronic items, or exclude them.

Availability

Many items in the WINGS eLibrary are available freely, and free of charge. Exceptions are marked with these symbols:

	Items for sale. Normally a link is given to the online bookstore or more information on how to obtain this item.
	Restricted items are items available for subscribers or members of the publishing organisation. Examples include magazines such as Chronicle on Philanthropy, or organisations such as WINGS.  You may well be a subscriber or member.  More information is available in the full record.

In the expanded search you can exclude such items in your search, or look specifically for these items.

WINGS-CF, WINGS-CI

	Items of specific relevance for the support of community foundations.
	Items of specific relevance for the support of corporate initiative (corporate philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, corporate community involvement etc.).

Categories

• Running an association
  This main category contains items especially relevant for WINGS participants: it covers issues related to running and operating an association (or support organisation), and questions related to the sector as a whole where the association or organisation is the leader (for example on “codes and standards”). Some topics of interest can be found in other different main categories (for example “Supporting grantmakers > knowledge management”).
  • General
    Items on running an association of grantmakers, or items that cut across subcategories. See also "Supporting grantmakers > Management and administration" for items on organizational management.
  • Codes and standards
    Items related to the development, implementation and monitoring of voluntary codes and standards for grantmakers and other methods of self-regulation. Includes sample codes. Any government laws or regulations are covered under “Promoting philanthropy > Legal, fiscal, regulations”.
  • Communications for associations
    Items related to associations’ communications, marketing, and outreach, including websites, publications and PR. See also "Supporting grantmakers > Communications"
  • Evaluation for associations
    Items related to evaluating the work of associations and philanthropy supporters, entailing both guides on how to do evaluations as well as actual evaluations. See also "Supporting grantmakers > Evaluation"
  • Governance for associations
    Items related specifically to board relations and governance of associations and support organisations. See also "Supporting grantmakers > governance".
  • History and theory of associations
    Items on the background, theory, history, purpose etc. of grantmaker associations, including case studies.
  • Membership policies and services
    Items primarily for associations that involve internal membership administration and development, including policies, retaining members, dues, and services.
  • Public policy development
    Items for grantmaker associations and support organisations that seek to advocate for the sector or influence public policy development for a better framework for philanthropy.
  • Sustainability
    Items related to the sustainability of associations and support organisations. Covering financial sustainability (including fundraising) but also broader issues.
• Supporting grantmakers
  This main category contains items to support foundations and other grantmakers and help them perform better. It covers issues such as management, development/growth, grantmaking, evaluation and knowledge management. They may have been developed by associations.
  • General
    Items on supporting grantmakers in general, or that cut across subcategories.
  • Asset development and management
    Items related to managing an endowment and other assets, for example on ethical investment. Items on asset development are especially relevant for new community foundations and other institutions that are building endowment.
  • Communications
    Items related to external communications, marketing, outreach, public relations, including websites, email, and publications.
  • Donor services
    Items relayed to services for donors, such as donor-advised funds at community foundations or assistance to donors to make cross-border grants.
  • Evaluation
    Items related to evaluating, measuring, monitoring the work of grantmakers and their grants, entailing both guides on how to do evaluations as well as actual evaluations.
  • Governance
    Items related to board relations and governance of foundations and other grantmakers, as well as non-profit boards in general. Issues relating to grantmaker association boards are covered in "Running an association > governance".
  • Grantmaking
    Items related to the art and craft of grantmaking, including guides, advice, background on effective or strategic grantmaking. Includes items on disaster/emergency grantmaking.
  • Knowledge management
    Items on knowledge management and libraries, as well as information technology and software systems for grantmakers (including grants management software).
  • Management and administration
    Items related to internal management and administration, as well as organisational strengthening, strategic development and leadership. See also "Supporting grantmakers > Strengthening NGOs".
  • Strengthening NGOs
    Items for grantmakers and others who wish to strengthen the capacity of their grantees or other NGOS.
• Promoting philanthropy
  This main category contains items on promoting philanthropy among individuals, communities and societies, and items of wider interest to the sector such as research, mapping, etc. Improving the legal, regulatory, social environment for philanthropy. Education, training and capacity building of donors which are not institutional grantmakers yet (ie, giving circles). Also items on promotion of civil society and civic attitudes in general.
  • General
    Items on promoting philanthropy in general, or that cut across subcategories.
  • Attitudes
    Items that present research on attitudes towards philanthropy, giving, volunteerism etc., or discuss ways to influence these attitudes and promote philanthropy.
  • Awards, prizes, fellowships
    References to awards, prizes, and fellowships in the fields of philanthropy and civil society.
  • Community philanthropy
    Items on community philanthropy including community foundations but also other community philanthropy organisations. Promotion of, and research on, community philanthropy.
  • Corporate philanthropy
    Items on corporate philanthropy including corporate foundations but also corporate giving programmes and other forms of corporate philanthropy. Includes corporate social responsibility, corporate citizenship, community involvement, etc. Promotion of, and research on, corporate philanthropy.
  • Cross-border philanthropy
    Items on international philanthropy including international grantmaking and cross-border donations. Includes items on disaster philanthropy. For diaspora philanthropy see "Promoting philanthropy > Specific group philanthropy".
  • Donor education
    Items on training and educating individual donors about philanthropy, grantmaking, etc. See also "Promoting philanthropy > starting a foundation".
  • History and theory of philanthropy

  This main category contains items of significance beyond the philanthropic sector but affecting it. Because of the vast scope of this field, this collection is limited and eclectic, with priority given to pointers for further resources.
  • General
    Items on engaging the public in general, or that cut across subcategories.
  • International development
    Items on international development, global south, Millennium Development Goals, etc.
  • Multilateral institutions
    Items on and from multilaterial institutions, as well as bilateral aid agencies, and on engaging them.
