Women In Philanthropy
This month we explore one of six plenaries for WINGSForum—women in philanthropy. We look at regional cross border trade, philanthropy during national transitions, and the impact of women's rights movements, along with new articles from Barbara Ibrahim, Ruth Jones, and CAF's Adam Pickering. We also take a special look at gender and agency in Africa in an interview with Halima Mohamed (TrustAfrica, PSJP). Downloadable resources include the World Giving Index 2013 (CAF), Advancing Human Rights (Foundation Center, IHRFG), and a new Markets for Good eBook on data. We also have an exciting events lineup through June.
Halima Mahomed on women, philanthropy, and power
As Philanthropy Program Advisor for TrustAfrica, Halima Mahomed is responsible for knowledge building, outreach and advocacy on African philanthropy. She also serves on the Philanthropy for Social Justice and Peace Working Group. Mahomed personally sees the combined issues of agency and voice as central, going so far as to say that philanthropy and power cannot be delinked from identity. We asked Mahomed for some words on women, leadership, and philanthropy in Africa. "It's not a matter of numbers, it's a matter of conception, a matter of understanding equality difference and the power dynamic in society. In many parts of the African continent we come from a patriarchal structure that flows out into everyday life." more »
World Giving Index 2013 focuses on emerging economies
Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has launched the 2013 World Giving Index, a global analysis of levels of participation in charitable activity. The report reveals that giving has returned to growth after a double dip global recession which saw engagement fall in 2009 and 2011, and that many developing nations are seeing huge increases in the proportion of people engaging in charitable giving including India, which now has more people (244 million) regularly donating to charity than any other country on earth. Philanthropy during national transitions
As the early euphoria surrounding the Arab uprisings has turned to caution, we are reminded that society-wide transitions are rarely predictable and almost never accomplished quickly. Instead, years of patient rebuilding of institutions and relationships are necessary once a dictatorship is overthrown or civil war comes to an end. Success is not a given, and to reach the final destination usually requires some mix of outside support as well as local investment in civil society, public institutions and the processes that instil cultures of democracy. Article by Barbara Ibrahim. more »
Women shaping agenda in regional cross border trade policy
In 2013, the Southern Africa Trust in partnership with the Southern Africa Cross Border Traders Association (SABCTA) convened a regional women cross border traders forum on mainstreaming gender in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Trade Policy and the Tripartite Free Trade Area Policy Framework. A position statement was adopted at the forum outlining policy proposals and addressing the challenges faced by women in trade. more »
Celebrating the impact of women's rights movements
Nicky McIntyre, executive director of Mama Cash, considers how change happens and where those with relatively small budgets can make the biggest contributions. This Alliance magazine article looks at the gains made by women’s movements to reduce discrimination, promote equality, and increase women’s ability to champion their own rights, while emphasising that more work needs to be done. more »
Engaged philanthropy is catching on globally
The past twelve months have seen significant expansion of the Social Venture Partners network into several new countries, including Australia, China, India and Ireland, providing these nations with a new tool for tackling pressing social problems. The SVP model of engaged philanthropy highlights the leadership and mentoring services donors can provide above and beyond their charitable giving. Intellectual and financial capital provided by donors is linked with the program capital provided by social purpose organizations: the combination is a powerful response to tackling social issues. Article by Ruth Jones. more »
