Longevity, continuing the journey

This issue of WINGS Dispatch is a celebration of longevity in philanthropy. We're happy to acknowledge several WINGS members turning 25 this year: Association of Foundations in the Netherlands, Cemefi (The Mexican Center for Philanthropy), and Japan Foundation Center. We look at 10 years of Community Philanthropy in Latvia and the Baltic States, and we're growing the legacy by welcoming these new WINGS members to the network: Foundation for Civil Society, Hudson Institute, PSJP, and Trust Africa. Also in this issue: Post 2015 global agenda, Data Charter, and peer learning for philanthropy support organisations. Together we're giving voice and visibility to philanthropy around the world — here's to continuing the journey!

Jorge Villalobos — 25 years of philanthropy in Mexico

Philanthropy in Mexico has increased exponentially since Cemefi, the Mexican Center for Philanthropy, was founded 25 years ago. We asked Executive President Jorge Villalobos to share a few words on the organisation's influence in Latin America, and how philanthropy has changed in Mexico since Cemefi was founded. "We believe in the power of collaboration through networks. Since its beginning Cemefi has focused on creating a national network through its members. And internationally it has participated in many different networks, both as a member and a founder." more »

WINGS joins coalition to advance Post 2015 global agenda

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were at the heart of discussions as various stakeholders met in New York to discuss how philanthropies and their civil society partners can contribute to the future development agenda, to be renewed in 2015. The event focused on accountability and innovation, and how organisations can work together to have a greater impact. Following up on the meeting, WINGS is hosting a webinar to share the discussions with its network. The webinar will held be on October 30th, at 2PM UTC (register here). more »

Using Post 2015 to rethink the Milky Way

Think about the development galaxy as the Milky Way, with its many (at times fragmented) stakeholders—pole stars—some more familiar than others (think "Polaris”), forming constellations made of bigger and smaller stars. If you know your astronomy a bit, you can take a peak on a clear night and recognise some of them. We are now at a turning point, less than 850 days to the 2015 target date for achieving the MDGs. Yet, it is unclear how foundations are to contribute to the new development framework about to emerge. This time, my metrics for success will be linked to our ability to redefine the way we look at the Milky Way of development. Article by Bathylle Missika. more »

Global Philanthropy Data Charter — Moving forward

Through a series of successful consultations the work towards a Global Philanthropy Data Charter is steadily advancing. After two face-to-face meetings and two webinars, ensuring the consultation process is as wide as possible, a third webinar was held on 8 October 2013. Twenty participants from ten countries reviewed the Charter, presented their perspectives and shared experiences on data collection projects and partnerships. Diverse input from people in different regions is essential for a representative and truly Global Charter. As WINGS moves forward on the consultation process, an invitation-only working meeting will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 4-5 November. It will further develop the document, assess progress and discuss next steps. Click here for more information, the Charter’s draft and webinar videos.

WINGS and IDIS host São Paulo peer learning event

In a rapidly changing landscape, organisations that support philanthropy are constantly challenged with identifying effective approaches to engage donors and support innovation in philanthropy. With this in mind WINGS, in partnership with IDIS, hosted a global Peer Learning Event (PLE) comprised of support organisations from the network to explore effective, innovative, and solution-oriented approaches to strengthen support organisations and their work.
