Transparency and Accountability—Theory, principle, action
This issue of WINGS Dispatch focuses on Transparency and Accountability. We talk to the CEO of Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup Global, to see how new technologies are driving social change at the grassroots level, and WINGS members EFC and SVP share unique viewpoints and important accountability-related tools with the network. Data Charter updates, new reports from CECP, Rockefeller Foundation, and UNDP, and we preview exciting events happening this month, including Social Good Brazil and Social Good Summit 2013.
Caravan Studios—Building apps that change the world
Marnie Webb is the CEO of Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup Global whose driving force seems to lie somewhere between Social Good Summit and the Rockefeller Foundation's 100 Resilient Cities initiative. We met with Webb to see how software apps can help sustain communities. "There’s a lot of confusion about what big data actually is. It’s a complex issue that’s going to require a lot of strategies working simultaneously to be able to effectively move forward... You’re not going to make an app that fixes hunger. But we could, if we start breaking the issue apart, make something that identifies land that’s available to plant food on within a community." more »
Progress for Global Philanthropy Data Charter
The latest Data Charter meeting discussed the difficulties of data standardisation in local contexts, privacy and confidentiality, and access to individual and aggregated data. Participants welcomed the Charter as a tool to raise awareness on the importance of data in philanthropy. To address the challenge of collecting data in Europe, they agreed that a first step would be to gather an inventory of foundations in the region. WINGS will host a webinar on 8th October as a followup to the discussion, and a third face-to-face meeting will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November. more »
EFC—Committed to accountability of foundations
The European Foundation Centre (EFC) recently shared with the network about its work in the issue of transparency and accountability, including the monitoring of EU policy affecting foundations, and its study with DAFNE that maps how the issue is framed by legal and tax legislation and self-regulatory initiatives across Europe. WINGS is currently working with the EFC and US Council on Foundations to further the work on accountability in international philanthropy by identifying unique perspectives in the Global South. more »
