Organizational Sustainability

The Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) is the only global network that focuses on philanthropy support. It is a network of 147 grant maker associations, philanthropy support organizations and emerging philanthropic initiatives in 53 countries. Its mission is to strengthen philanthropy and a culture of giving through mutual learning and support, knowledge sharing and professional development among its participants. WINGS also strives to give voice and visibility to philanthropy at a global level.

WINGS, a learning organization, convenes various peer learning events (PLE) to provide opportunities for peers to come together to consider issues of mutual interest, share experiences, participate in joint problem solving, gain new ideas and information, and build relationships and ongoing connections. That sustainability remains a recurring challenge and priority issue for many associations and support organizations is confirmed in meetings, conversations and consultations with WINGS members. Sustainability continues to be a priority concern regardless of where the associations and support organizations are based or whatever size and stage of development they are.

To support its members, WINGS implemented global and regional peer learning events on sustainability to capture the experiences and insights of WINGS members in making themselves more sustainable. The global PLE specifically for community foundations (CFs) and CF support organizations was held in San Antonio, Texas (USA) on October 8 to 9, 2009. And the regional PLE for WINGS members from the Middle East and Africa was held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 21 to 23, 2009.

WINGS endeavors to capture the learning from these events in a concrete output that can serve as a resource material for the PLE participants as well as other WINGS members who were not able to participate in these PLEs on sustainability. This resource book is work in progress and WINGS will endeavor to continue to document experiences and lessons learned as its members continue to address their sustainability challenges.
