SOCIAL INVESTMENT SERVICES
We provide an integrated approach to giving and social investment by encouraging dialogue and cooperation across all relevant sectors. We work with social investors and recipients to improve the management and impact of contributed resources. We offer the following specific services:
- Social Investment Policy & Strategy:
We consult to business, government and the non-profit sector to develop community investment policies and strategies. We help companies to meet and exceed their corporate giving objectives in a professional and tax-effective manner.
To support the increasing need for companies’ social accountability in terms of corporate governance and BBBEE codes, we advise on social investment vehicles that will create greater value for companies and social enterprise.
- Social Investment Management & Evaluation
We consult to business, government agencies and the non-profit sector to improve planning, management and evaluation of funded development programmes.
CORPORATE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT BY EMPLOYEES
We promote, manage and administer a variety of corporate community involvement activities:
We promote and manage payroll giving programmes through our ‘Give as you Earn’ (GAYE), programme. This provides a simple mechanism for employees to donate to a cause of their choice. Companies can choose to match employee contributions ‘rand-for-rand’.
- Employee Volunteering and Matched Giving
We promote and manage employee volunteering and matched giving programmes:
Employee Volunteering is becoming an increasingly significant aspect of corporate community engagement, as companies demand new ways of increasing their social role. Companies can support the volunteering efforts of employees in various ways from paid time off to volunteer, to gifts in kind.
Matched Giving provides the opportunity for the company to match time or money contributed by its employees with a cash contribution to the NPO where the employees are volunteering.
GRANTMAKING
We also promote giving by families and individuals:
- Private Foundations and Trusts
We promote establishment of endowed foundations by individuals and families. We advise on legal structure, fiscal issues and funding strategy and management. We can also administer funds and disbursements on behalf of clients.
We promote individual giving and we help individual givers to control their giving by offering them advice on giving options, and a safe and effective channel for their contributions.
In addition to the grantmaking services associated with our consultancy and administrative activities described above, CAF Southern Africa is a grantmaker in its own right: We have established the CAF Southern Africa Trust which provides South Africans living in the UK with an easy and tax-effective way to donate to South African causes.
We have also created the Eugene Saldanha Memorial Fund in memory of our late founder. Through this vehicle the public is able to make contributions to non-profits working towards social justice.
SUPPORT TO THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR
We conduct independent reviews of NPOs so that prospective donors can make informed decisions about their giving and social investment. Accountability of organisations in the civil domain is a pressing issue for funders and other actors. We have developed a database of validated organisations which we can share with clients, and we do validation on request from clients.
Based on the requirements of donors and the needs of organisations in our validated database, we can provide both donors and NPOs with information allowing them to make informed funding partnership decisions.
TRAINING AND ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
We help corporates to manage their corporate social investment and associated initiatives through on-the-job training.
We help NPOs to build their fundraising and management capacity in order to maximise financial resources and organisational impact.
RESEARCH & INNOVATION
Our approach is founded on authoritative research and innovative practice that draws on both local and international models.
We advocate for a more enabling environment for giving and non-profit sector activity, and we provide information and advice in support of improved policy and practice.
We participate in multi-sectoral coalitions to improve legislation concerning the non-profit sector, and to make giving simpler and more tax-effective.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
To inform our clients and facilitate communication within the social investment sector CAF is currently establishing a website. This will be an online resource of information and contacts for CAF’s clients, partners and other interested entities. We also have a website for employee volunteering.
We produce a quarterly email newsletter, Isiphala Online , which contains information on the activities of CAF’s clients, local and international news, networking opportunities and a variety of social investment resources and links.
CONVENING
Because of our cross-sectoral span we are uniquely placed to bring together a variety of social development actors for the purpose of knowledge sharing, practical cooperation and coalition-building. We host events such as:
Independently or with partners we convene meetings to discuss and workshop issues of relevance to funding and social development.
CAF Southern Africa hosts a biannual conference on themes critical to social investment, social enterprise, and the sustainability of the non-profit sector. |
