To deepen understanding, promote cooperation and stimulate exchange of ideas between the United States and Europe in the spirit of the postwar Marshall Plan

The German Marshall Fund divides its work into grantmaking, fellowships, and partnerships to assist projects that cover the following program areas:

• Foreign Policy
• Immigration and integration
• Leadership
• Central and Eastern Europe

An example of one such program is the Community Foundation Fellowship program, which GMF organizes together with the King Baudouin Foundation of Belgium and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. CFF is a three-week program for senior staff of community foundations on both sides of the Atlantic to collaborate and exchange ideas and experiences, and to learn about the social, cultural, and economic conditions affecting community foundations outside their own country. Another is the Marshall Memorial Fellowship Program, which is a month long study tour for young leaders on both sides of the Atlantic to learn about and experience the culture, politics, economics and current issues of their counterparts.
