Framework to Assess the value of Philanthropy Support Organizations | Madrid, Jul 2015

WINGS members explored how to construct an evaluative framework for philanthropy infrastructure organizations, developed by the field for the field, with the end goal of creating a self-assessment tool.

The report Infrastructure in Focus: A Global Picture of Organizations Serving Philanthropy identified four categories for the main benefits of philanthropy support organizations: capacity, capability, connection and credentials — a starting point for the development of a framework to assess the value of philanthropy infrastructure organizations. Developing an evaluation tool will enable these organizations to measure effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses.

Impact assessment, social return on investment (SROI) and evaluation were identified by WINGS members and partners as a top trend in the philanthropy world. There is increasing recognition that we need better ways to account for the social, economic and environmental value that result from our activities. The language varies — impact, returns, benefit, value — but the question of how much of a difference we are making is the same. Understanding and managing this broader value is increasingly important for membership associations and philanthropy support organizations.

LOCAL CULTURES OF GIVING: OLD TRADITIONS, CURRENT CONTEXTS, EMERGING TRENDS | JOHANNESBURG, NOV 2014
FLYER | AGENDA | PARTICIPANTS | REPORT | ONLINE FORUM

In 2014 in partnership with Southern Africa Trust and Southern African Community Grantmakers Leadership Forum (SACGLF), WINGS invited support organizations from the network to participate in a global PLE to bring awareness of the need to document stories from all regions, including Africa and the Arab Region, in an effort to create a truly global philanthropy enriched with diversity. To expand the scope of the PLE, we are hosting a new members-only Local Cultures of Giving forum here on our website. Join the forum at wingsweb.org/localcultures.
