Barry Gaberman Lecture on Global Philanthropy

WINGS has created a new lecture in honour of Barry Gaberman, the now retired Senior Vice President of the Ford Foundation, in recognition of his deep commitment to the promotion of international philanthropy and his founding role in WINGS, of which he is Chair Emeritus.

Barry Gaberman

The lecture will be given every four years at WINGSForum, the global gathering of the WINGS network, and was inaugurated at WINGSForum 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand. Barry Gaberman gave the first lecture in Bangkok - full lecture available here. Subsequent speakers will be world leaders in the development of philanthropy.

This and subsequent lectures, and future global gatherings of WINGS, will be supported and sustained by a new Fund, and WINGS has invited contributions to the fund from individuals or foundations and other organisations that know Barry and have benefited from his wisdom and experience.

For more information see the letter of invitation, which was originally distributed early in 2006. You can also find out here how to donate.

Letter from WINGS

Dear Friend,

We invite you to contribute to a new Fund which is being created to inaugurate and sustain this new Lecture, in honour of Barry Gaberman's retirement as Senior Vice President of the Ford Foundation, and honouring his role in WINGS of which he is Chair Emeritus.

WINGS is the only global network whose focus is the way grantmakers are supported and developed and new philanthropy promoted. Well over half the organisations in the network are associations of grantmakers – now found in all regions of the world and still a rapidly growing field. The others are diverse organisations dedicated to the promotion and support of philanthropy. Most of the organisations in the network operate at national level and are therefore unique in their own countries. While WINGS was created and fostered by many people and several donors, the field owes a real debt of gratitude to Barry who has long recognised that “the sun rarely shines on grantmaker associations” and used his knowledge and expertise to advocate for and foster the field. Thanks largely to him, a gathering of grantmaker associations in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1998 transformed into WINGS, which since then has proved its value to the field of philanthropy again and again.

We have invited Barry himself to give the first lecture at WINGSForum 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand (16-18 November). WINGSForum brings the global network together once every four years and it is therefore the perfect occasion to honour Barry's role in founding WINGS, and reflect on his long and important career in the field. We plan to host the Barry Gaberman Lecture each time WINGSForum is held. When we plan WINGSForum 2010, we will involve a small group of key people (including Barry, we hope) to identify a world leader in the development of philanthropy whom we can invite to be our guest lecturer.

We hope that everyone who has worked with Barry and benefited from his wisdom and experience will want to contribute to the Fund which we have set up at King Baudouin Foundation United States (KBFUS) to finance this endeavour. KBFUS will invest the Fund's principal and use its income to finance the lecture each time it is organised. We hope that the fund will be large enough to ensure that any additional income can make a contribution to some of the costs of WINGSForum itself.

We are aiming to create a Fund of at least $100,000 USD and envisage that the fund will exist for at least 20 years: we will build in a review that allows it to continue after that if appropriate or to be spent down for the benefit of WINGS and the primary objectives of WINGS if circumstances have changed. We are halfway towards our goal, thanks to many individuals and organisations. They are listed on the WINGS website and their special messages will be passed on to Barry. Please consider supporting the Fund and encouraging others to do so to help us meet our goal.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
