Developing Philanthropy in Latin America & The Caribbean
WINGS decided to give significant attention to the Latin America and the Caribbean-LAC region, as a way to strengthen the philanthropy support ecosystem where it is most needed, one of its strategic priorities.
The challenges faced by the LAC countries are unique and reflect greatly on the philanthropic sector, especially giving the social and economic inequality, the political restrictions, the low trust in the institutions, the relationship with the government. The region has a great need for improved and thoughtful participation of philanthropy, with better collaboration, sustainable practices, impact evaluation and an enabling environment to support not only the philanthropy work but also its relationship with the civil society and the government.
In the past years, WINGS developed projects and initiatives focused on the philanthropy environment in the region:
In October 28th and 29th, 2019, WINGS organized the 2nd Regional Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean: Finding Common Paths to Fostering an Enabling Environment in the Region to bring together key actors from philanthropy infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean to promote peer learning, build regional capacity, and define a joint agenda to fostering a more enabling environment in the region.
The meeting ended with the publication of a Collective Declaration from the LAC Affinity Group members. The document states the importance of strengthening regional coordination to promote an enabling environment and to be constructive interlocutors for authorities at the regional level to discuss policies that affect the sector, including financial and private policies. The declaration highlights the need for all interested actors to join this effort to promote a strong, diverse, sustainable, effective, accountable and independent philanthropic sector in the region. Available in English, Español and Português.
With the help of Porticus WINGS implemented a project entitled“Toward a strengthened way forward for philanthropic organizations in LAC”, on the second half of 2017.
The project built a picture of the LAC philanthropy ecosystem and its gaps; convened key philanthropic actors in the WINGS’ Regional Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean to identify priorities and potential for regional exchanges; and define a roadmap for systematized collaboration.
