Developing Philanthropy in Latin America & The Caribbean

WINGS decided to give significant attention to the Latin America and the Caribbean-LAC region, as a way to strengthen the philanthropy support ecosystem where it is most needed, one of its strategic priorities.

The challenges faced by the LAC countries are unique and reflect greatly on the philanthropic sector, especially giving the social and economic inequality, the political restrictions, the low trust in the institutions, the relationship with the government. The region has a great need for improved and thoughtful participation of philanthropy, with better collaboration, sustainable practices, impact evaluation and an enabling environment to support not only the philanthropy work but also its relationship with the civil society and the government.

In the past years, WINGS developed projects and initiatives focused on the philanthropy environment in the region. With the help of Porticus WINGS implemented a project entitled “Toward a strengthened way forward for philanthropic organizations in LAC”, on the second half of 2017.

The project built a picture of the LAC philanthropy ecosystem and its gaps; convened key philanthropic actors in the WINGS’ Regional Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean to identify priorities and potential for regional exchanges; and define a roadmap for systematized collaboration.

WINGS LAC Regional Meeting Report was published in 2018 with the main discussions and the key finds from the meeting. Thanks to this efforts, the Latin America and Caribbean Affinity Group was created, as a dynamic task force with a variety of influential actors working on the region.

For the next years, WINGS will continue its commitment to strengthen the landscape for philanthropy in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the following objectives:

  • Bring together key actors to promote peer learning and to build a joint agenda for enabling environment;

  •  Foster and facilitate joint actions at the regional level; and

  •  Strengthen emerging and existing infrastructure organizations, improving their organizational capacity and strategic leadership.
