Latest Trends in Philanthropy

Check out some of the latest trends in philanthropy happening in our Network!

Philanthropy: looking forward

Benjamin Bellegy, WINGS' Executive Director, talks about the new trends and some of the key questions a visionary funder should ask himself.

"Philanthropy is not only about the wealthy, it is about everyone. Individual giving is much bigger than institutional philanthropy, it is the actual “big philanthropy”. It is very important that we coordinate and connect individual giving practices with institutional philanthropy." Read Benjamin's insights here.

Interview done by the Association of German Foundations as part of the #NextPhilanthropy initiative.

Impact at scale

In this interview, Arif Neky, the Senior Advisor for UN Strategic Partnerships and Coordinator of the SDG Partnership Platform (SDGPP) in Kenya explains more about the role of philanthropy networks to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

Referring to the importance of engagement with other actors, "It is therefore also important that philanthropy is part of a much broader and longer-term effort across multiple stakeholders to create long term investments and impacts that are systems based rather than mere pilots or what I call 'short puffs of excellence' which die off after their funding runs out."  Read the full interview here.

Takeaways from Network meeting in Jamaica

James Magowan, co-ordinating director of Dafne, reflecting on WINGS conference 'Driving Philanthropy for the Future' in Jamaica.

"The challenge ahead will not be around support organisation institution building or indeed how support organisations can work together, but rather around how to create a new paradigm where the work of support organisations, operating individually and collaboratively, becomes essential to achieving effective philanthropy"  Read more here.

Greater giving, greater philanthropy

“By promoting giving, we are promoting a stronger philanthropic sector too. But to do so will require ongoing investment in support of our philanthropy ecosystem.”

Anita Gallagher, Director InnovaSocial and #GivingTuesday Leader in Mexico, João Paulo Vergueiro, CEO of ABCR and #GivingTuesday Leader in Brazil and Teresa Echaurren, #GivingTuesday Leader in Chile share their thoughts about the Greater Giving Summit hosted by the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Read more here.

Philanthropy Support Organizations leading on advocacy

David Biemesderfer the President & CEO of United Philanthropy Forum shares his insights on this year's Foundations on the Hill (FOTH): “We wanted to make sure they understood that philanthropy is not just another special interest group, but rather a sector dedicated to creating thriving communities that benefit everyone. Delegations underscored that philanthropy offers more than grantmaking and can take on many different roles: providing data and research, convening diverse people and organizations in a community, facilitating partnerships, pooling resources and leveraging federal investments.” Read his entire piece here.

GFCF's new report on community-led development

The Global Fund for Community Foundations published a new report at the beginning of the month: "New Horizons for Community-Led Development: Recommendations for Funders" explores the current landscape of strategies and approaches that put local people and local institutions in charge of their own development and draws thoughtful recommendations for funders interested in supporting community‑led approaches that shift power closer to the ground on what roles they can play – both in terms of their grantmaking and non‑grantmaking activities. Read his entire piece here.

IANCF at WINGS’ Driving Philanthropy for the Future

The Ibero-American Network of Community Foundations and its members have pressing questions about the field of community philanthropy. “How can we attract more people as a mean to increase community participation?”, “How can we share what we do in a way that invites more people to participate in community processes?”, “Should our organization map local actions with global SDG goals? How to do it?" These topics and others will be addressed at WINGS' Driving Philanthropy for the Future that took in Kingston, Jamaica, from April 23rd to 26th. Learn more here.

Lessons & insights from new European research

In this interview, authors of the new European research on philanthropy infrastructure Michael Alberg-Seberich and Filiz Bikmen tell us how this research can be globally relevant to others working in the field in different regions. This is the first comprehensive research on philanthropy infrastructure in the region.

Referring to philanthropy infrastructure "...foundations and social investors in Europe do understand the reasoning, the impact behind such support systems. The European case documents the importance of a joint understanding of how to develop the sector. The challenge is to do so by also embracing the diversity of the world of giving." Read the interview here.

Could you be undermining your own impact?

“Would you include something in a proposal that you believe would likely result in 30% greater impact, if it made you 10% less likely to win the grant?” Ann Mei Chang of Lean Impact and formerly Chief of Innovation at USAID reflects on how grantmakers are in a privileged position to help grantees innovate. Read more here.

Collaboration between Philanthropy & Policy Actors

AVPN's Patsian Low, Rachel Chan, and Anjali Shivananda write about the Asia Policy Forum and the potential for philanthropy to engage with policy actors. "Collaborations between policymakers and philanthropy and social investment have the potential to channel financial, intellectual and human capital drawn from private and public sectors to build an enabling environment for the social economy to flourish." Learn more about this experience here.

New Report: Enabling Philanthropy and Social Impact in India

A strong support ecosystem can make the social impact and philanthropy sectors more effective, strategic and sustainable in its work, therefore strengthening civil society. In February 2018, Indian ecosystem leaders were gathered at a WINGS meeting in Mumbai to discuss how to strengthen and encourage more connections in the philanthropy and social impact sectors. One year later, Ashoka University's Centre for Social Impact & Philanthropy and WINGS are proud to launch this mapping whose objectives are to have a common picture of the infrastructure that exists for the sector. We hope this will report will spur discussions around closing the gap for unfilled functions, the potential for synergies and collaboration in one of the world's fastest growing philanthropy sectors.

Echoing the Centre's words, we hope this study sparks a conversation among relevant stakeholders on building the support ecosystem in India and that growing investments in Indian philanthropy will strengthen the whole social impact sector. Read the report.

While they are uncovering new and interesting research from the region, we still need more data to encourage philanthropy development and incentives.

Interested in Corporate Philanthropy?

CECP: The CEO Force for Good, in association with The Conference Board, found in their annual Giving in Numbers: 2018 Edition that companies have risen to elevated expectations and heightened community needs. CECP just launched its annual Giving in Numbers: 2018 Edition, the largest, most robust, industry-leading, and internationally-recognized research of corporate social investment.
How can funders be transparent about the work they support, while making sure that they aren’t harming grantees or others?

This conversation guide is based on research conducted by Ariadne and The Engine Room, with contributions from 360Giving, between March-October 2018. The project was supported by Digital Impact (part of the Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford University).
Australian Women Donors Network Toolkit Available

The Gender-wise Toolkit is a resource for grantmakers to apply the gender lens to their giving. Australian Women Donors Network facilitates gender-sensitive practice within the social investment and grant-making sector.
“You say intermediary, I say…?”

On 25th October the Africa Philanthropy Network (APN), along with the Global Fund for Community Foundations, Kenya Community Development Foundation and TrustAfrica organized a Twitter Chat to delve into the often problematic term “intermediary.

They explored alternatives to the term, which it was broadly agreed tends to side-line southern development organizations – their knowledge of, proximity to, and rootedness in local contexts passed over by donors when they are narrowly defined as intermediary grantmakers. This was just the start of the conversation, which will be continued at the upcoming APN conference in Mauritius. Read the full Chat. #GivingandPower #ShiftThePower
