While they are uncovering new and interesting research from the region, we still need more data to encourage philanthropy development and incentives.

Interested in Corporate Philanthropy?

CECP: The CEO Force for Good, in association with The Conference Board, found in their annual Giving in Numbers: 2018 Edition that companies have risen to elevated expectations and heightened community needs. CECP just launched its annual Giving in Numbers: 2018 Edition, the largest, most robust, industry-leading, and internationally-recognized research of corporate social investment.
How can funders be transparent about the work they support, while making sure that they aren’t harming grantees or others?

This conversation guide is based on research conducted by Ariadne and The Engine Room, with contributions from 360Giving, between March-October 2018. The project was supported by Digital Impact (part of the Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford University).
Australian Women Donors Network Toolkit Available

The Gender-wise Toolkit is a resource for grantmakers to apply the gender lens to their giving. Australian Women Donors Network facilitates gender-sensitive practice within the social investment and grant-making sector.
“You say intermediary, I say…?”

On 25th October the Africa Philanthropy Network (APN), along with the Global Fund for Community Foundations, Kenya Community Development Foundation and TrustAfrica organized a Twitter Chat to delve into the often problematic term “intermediary.

They explored alternatives to the term, which it was broadly agreed tends to side-line southern development organizations – their knowledge of, proximity to, and rootedness in local contexts passed over by donors when they are narrowly defined as intermediary grantmakers. This was just the start of the conversation, which will be continued at the upcoming APN conference in Mauritius. Read the full Chat. #GivingandPower #ShiftThePower

Academics in Philanthropy
When you think of the philanthropy ecosystem, what players come to mind? This month we are putting the spotlight on academics & their research/teaching centers and departments who provide a lot of research, insight, data, best practices, leadership, and case studies for the field. They are a key component to strengthening the field. They may train tomorrow’s leaders or provide the research that informs your advising or grantmaking strategies.

Below we invite you to explore more in-depth about one of these centre, learn about our affinity group , and look at WINGS' initial mapping of these players. To make comments, suggest an institution, or join the affinity group, email Sarah at scampello@wingsweb.org.

In this interview, Swee Sum Lam of ACSEP tells us how her center is strengthening philanthropy and social purpose organizations in Asia. Learn more about how academics are and can be excellent partners in strengthening the field. Read more.

Initial Map of Academic Philanthropy Centers

WINGS is excited to present you with a sneak peak of our latest update to our mapping of academic centers that teach and research philanthropy as a principle objective of their work. You can access our mapping here (it requires a Google Account). If you don't have an account, view this alternative version. Information for each center can be accessed by clicking on their pins located on the map.

A quick note on mapped centers. There are more institutions with a "primary" focus on philanthropy research and teaching in North America and Europe. In the interest of mapping emerging centers and programs in less-represented areas, there may be some programs in the Global South whose main emphasis is not philanthropy, but incorporate it as a major part of their program.

It discusses how philanthropy is structured, its challenges, how it is progressing, and how it can be improved in Tanzania.

Why philanthropy needs to be engaged with Tech
"Building an awareness and understanding of technology in relation to Rights and how it can help or harm the creation of a more civil society is a lot to add to busy daily lives. But no one is going to do it for us." Chris Worman of TechSoup argues that whether we currently understand technological developments well or not, we have a responsibility to make sure that the vulnerable people that we serve are taken into account. What do you think?
